PANGKOR ISLAND... NICE SCENERY

Welcome to Pangkor Island =>
Off the coast of Perak state, lies a cluster of small islands with unquestionably some of the best beaches on the western coast of peninsular Malaysia. Among them, two islands predominate in terms of accessibility and infrastructure - the largest Pangkor and smaller, privately owned Pangkor Laut- hosting one luxurious resort. If you are looking for high standard accommodation on the main island, head up north to Teluk Belanga or Teluk Dalam.

Located about 90km south west from lpoh and reachable by ferry from Lumut in only 35mins, Pangkor Island is 8 square km big and inhabited by circa 25 thousand people, mainly fishermen. They live in scattered fishing settlements, especially on the eastern coast, and their catch consists mainly of cuttlefish and anchovy. Pangkor is intensively promoted as a budget tourist destination, however it’s still fishing and dried seafood to be the main
industry.

PLACES OF INTEREST

Pangkor Forest Reserve
Central Rainforest Reserve
This area comprised of Pangkor Hill, with the highest peak on the island, and Tortoise Hill. There is a trekking trail available from Pasir Bogak to Sungai Pinang Town. Along the trail, you can also trek to Tortoise Hill to have panoramic view over Tortoise Bay.
Near the entrance of the trek, there is a lovely waterfall and a pool available for an outdoor natural Jacuzzi while revel in the cacophony of the wildlife – absolute sensation.
It is advisable to wear shoes and long outfit to avoid becoming the meal for leeches and other insects as the jungle is relatively dense.
Southern Rainforest Reserve
This area comprised of Teluk Segadas Hill. There is a trekking trail available from Telok Gedung to Segadas Beach which is a relatively short trek. The trail starts somewhere around the signage of “Teluk Gedung” and ends right at the beautiful beach – an experience of tranquility, as to be greeted by the ocean after an engagement with the wildlife.
Northern Rainforest Reserve
Surrounding Pangkor Island Beach Resort, this jungle is still virgin, begging to be explored. There is not a single trail available and still waiting for the real adventurer to create one. Jungle bashing is the primary skill for the experience trekker and if you are one, any part of the jungle is your adventure seeking ground. Enjoy your exploration!

Food
Finding food (specially fresh frutti di mare) shouldn’t be a problem on an island, although it’s always good to write down few recommended places. One of them is Rock Tiger Resort, a small hotel hidden in a lush garden, located in the southern part of the island. Pay them a visit if you’re keen on trying Traditional Planter’s Curry Tiffin, prepared by Indian chef Bavanni and served in romantic candle light. Next is Ye Lin Restaurant in Pasir Bogak, serving probably the best seafood in the vicinity. It’s open in the evenings, but be prepared for a crowd- you might want to book a table in advance. Moving north to well-known Coral Bay you’ll find the Daddy’s CafĂ©. Set in beautiful scenery with outdoor tables, serves food and drinks from lunch time till late in the evening. Drop by if interested in local cuisine with western touch. For all fans of Malay simple eats: head towards Teluk Dalam to Sabar Menanti (N 04’ 14.886 E 100’ 33.175). You’ll get there not only traditional versions of the dishes, but also delicious Roti Canai Milo, with chocolate filling.

The most beautiful beaches are Nipah Beach and Coral Beach, both situated in Nipah Bay on the west-northern coast, popular among foreigners (mainly Europeans and Australians) as well as locals. With tiny islets nearby (Giam and Mentagor) surrounded by corals, fish and sea cucumbers, this place is a fully satisfactory snorkeling spot. If you are into other watersports- they are easily accessible everywhere around the island. For active and adventurous- there’s an uphill jungle trek across the island (takes around 4hrs). Pangkor has a lot to offer also to bird watchers- among many interesting species, amazing hornbills can be easily spotted.Put the cherry on top with having a night swim-being surrounded by blue glowing plankton feels like dancing with stars.
